First Impressions of the SMOK RPM C

Look & Feel

The first thing we noticed when removing the RPM C from its package is that it’s quite a bit smaller than the previous RPM 5. Some people think a bigger vape means a better one, but one thing we know about SMOK is that they’re always looking for ways to make their products more efficient—which often means packing more features and capabilities into less space.

Another notable new design feature for the RPM C is the mouthpiece—unlike the cylindrical tip on the RPM 5, this one follows more in line with what you’d expect from the brand’s Nord series, with a duck-bill opening instead. A lot of folks find these mouthpieces more comfortable, so the RPM C scores a point for user-friendliness here.

The colours for the RPM C are lots of fun, too—it uses a series of two-tone schemes including “Purple Orange”, “Pink Green” and the like. These aren’t exactly subtle, but they do convey a sense of the excitement SMOK is clearly trying to whip up with this new device.

Practicality & Ease of Use

Make no mistake—there are quite a lot of features on this device, so the way they’re all laid out is an important factor to consider for assessing its user-friendliness. Fortunately, SMOK keeps the controls simple here: just a firing button and two adjustment buttons underneath the OLED screen, which is mercifully readable in spite of all the information it displays.

Using the SMOK RPM C

Charging & Setup

Using the charger supplied with the RPM C can get you a full battery from empty in about 1 hour and 45 minutes—which is pretty good, considering its capacity. Once you’ve done that, filling the pod is easy. In fact, SMOK has gone the extra mile to make it even easier for you by adding a unique sliding top-fill design you won’t find on the RPM 5.

You don’t even have to take the pod out of the device with this feature. Simply slide the top of the mouthpiece back, fill up the pod with your favourite e-juice, then slide it closed again when you’re ready to vape. This is an extremely innovative and user-friendly feature that we really appreciate—and we imagine any user wanting an easy, straightforward experience will feel the same way.

Flavour Profile & Strength

The RPM C is an open pod system, so you’re not limited when it comes to available flavours. You will want to choose the type of e-liquid you’re filling the pod with based on which of the two supplied coils you’ve installed, though. Here’s a quick rundown of what we recommend:

  • For the 0.3ohm coil, use e-liquids that contain more VG (these will result in bigger clouds and be easier for more open RDL draws).
  • For the 0.6ohm coil, use e-liquids with a 50/50 VG/PG split (these will give you more flavour for your tighter MTL draws).

Draw Quality

So, after all that setup, it’s time to answer the million-dollar question: how well does the RPM C actually work when you’re puffing away on it?

We found that the RPM C really shines when you’re using it for RDL vaping. Lowering the resistance and dialling up the power output on the device will get you some very satisfying clouds here, and the flavour is shockingly potent. Way to go, SMOK!

That said, the RPM C isn’t bad for MTL vaping either—closing the adjustable airflow almost all the way and keeping your wattage down under 20W or so will get you a nice tight draw. We prefer the RDL experience here, but it’s certainly versatile enough to give you both.

Longevity

The amount of time you’re going to get on a single charge with the RPM C really depends on what kind of vaping you’re doing and how much power you’re using. Cranking the power to 50W for maximum RDL vaping will probably limit you to about half a day of use, but you’ll get closer to a full day’s worth if you stick to lower-power MTL hits. We wish it didn’t have to be that way, since the RDL draw on this device is so good—but hey, that’s just science.

Should You Buy the SMOK RPM C?

The RPM C is going to be your new best friend if you want a budget-friendly, pocket-sized device that excels at flavourful RDL vaping. It’s pretty decent for MTL as well, but if that’s the only kind of vaping you want to do, it might be worth looking elsewhere—check out the RPM 5 for a device that really slams in that regard.
