Right off the bat, you’ll see that the Caliburn X has a more modern and high-tech appearance than previous Caliburn devices, which tended to embrace minimalism. This is most obviously due to the Caliburn X’s OLED screen—a feature you won’t find on any of the G series models.

The Caliburn X also looks and feels a bit more robust than its predecessors, thanks to the aluminium alloy used to construct its outer portion. That’s not to say other Caliburn pod systems are flimsy, but this one definitely feels like it could withstand being dropped a couple of times (not that we’re recommending you try it).

The addition of a slider on the side of the device for airflow adjustment is also pretty noticeable, and contributes to the Caliburn X’s high-end feel. But the overall shape and style of the device aren’t worlds away from the Caliburn G or A series models that fans of the brand have come to know and love. While there are obviously some new bells and whistles here, it still feels familiar enough that it shouldn’t alienate devotees.

Charging the UWell Caliburn X for the First Time

USB-C charging has become the standard for high-quality vape devices in the last year or so, which is why it’s no surprise that the Caliburn X uses this type of charger—to be honest, we’d be pretty disappointed if it didn’t.

What is pleasantly surprising is how quickly you can charge the Caliburn X to full. We managed to fill the 850 mAh battery in under an hour, making this a device you can set up and start using quickly. Definitely a plus for users who are eager to start enjoying their new vape device.

Preparing the Pod in the UWell Caliburn X

As you pop out the pod for the Caliburn X to fill it for the first time, you’ll probably notice that it holds a little more than the 2ml pods in the G2. That’s because the pods for the Caliburn X have been upgraded to hold 3ml of e-liquid, which gives you more vaping mileage between fills—a nice touch.

As for filling and installing, there’s nothing really new to report. The pods are still filled from the top, although there’s an e-liquid viewing window built into these ones to help you see the level inside. And they still click into place just the way you’d expect if you’ve used Caliburn pod systems before.

The Caliburn X comes with 1.2Ω and 0.8Ω coils that are integrated into their pods. You can also buy 1.0Ω Caliburn X replacement pods. This gives you a nice range of vaping styles to explore, further adding to the impression of this being a top-tier device. As always, please make sure you prime new coils before use by leaving your pod alone for 5-10 minutes after the coil has been installed and the pod has been filled with e-juice (this prevents early coil burnout and gives you a better taste for longer).

Once you’ve charged your device, filled the pod, and installed the coil, you should be ready to start vaping!

One of the nice new features on the Nord 5’s pod is the way it’s designed to lock the coils in place once you pop them in. This prevents your coil from coming loose if you happen to drop, shake, or put down the pod before popping it into your device, which is a convenient touch. Remember to prime new coils before use to prevent them from burning out too soon and get the best taste from your device!

Caliburn X Airflow Controls

Instead of using a wheel or making you rotate the pod (like on the Caliburn G), the Caliburn X has an airflow adjustment valve you can open to varying degrees with a slider on the side. We find this a little more intuitive than the other methods mentioned above, although there was nothing really wrong with them—this is an improvement, but not a total game changer.

Caliburn X Device Battery Life & Performance

This is where the real value of the Caliburn X becomes apparent. Depending on how you configure your settings, you should be able to get over a day of vaping without recharging the battery or refilling the pod.

The Caliburn X performed well for us with a few different e-juices, depending on the coils we installed. Of the two coils that came with the device, the 1.2Ω coil worked best with fairly strong nic salt e-liquids, whereas we’d recommend using something a bit less potent with the 0.8Ω coil so you don’t get too strong a hit. But trust your taste and use your best judgement here.

The OLED Screen on the Caliburn X

It’s nice to have the screen on the X providing insights about your settings and usage, too. The display is big enough that nothing feels cramped, and you get to see things like:

Caliburn X Output Controls

Controls for the X are simple and intuitive. To adjust the wattage, just press the fire button three times while your vape is on and you’ll see the wattage start to blink on the screen. While it’s blinking, pressing the fire button again will raise it until you hit 20W, after which it will loop back around to 5W and start counting up again. Press the fire button twice in a row to lock the settings.

Controlling the Nord 5 is easy and natural, too—here’s a quick primer on what to do:

• Press fire 5 times to turn the device on or off
• Press both adjustment buttons at once to lock the device
• Press either of the adjustment buttons to change the wattage (up or down)
• Press either of the adjustment buttons and the fire button at once to reset the puff count

And although we wouldn’t say the X is in an entirely different league than these others (which are all perfectly solid vape devices), we do think the extra control over airflow and wattage makes this a worthwhile upgrade—or a great reason to jump ship from another brand if you’ve been curious about UWell for a while.

The Caliburn X is a great-looking vape with larger-capacity pods than previous UWell devices, variable wattage settings, and (slightly) improved airflow controls.
