The packaging for this kit is pretty sleek, which is to be expected for most SMOK products. The company has built quite a reputation over the past few years for creative and appealing design choices, and they don’t cut any corners on the Nord 4—not even when it comes to the box.

As soon as we opened up the box for this kit, we noticed a couple of things. Firstly, the Nord itself is absolutely beautiful. These pens come in a variety of colours, but most of them feature either SMOK’s popular cobra pattern or the newer resin pattern—both of which are simultaneously classy and eye-catching.

Secondly, we noticed that the USB charger for this vape system is a little on the small side. That’s not necessarily a problem; you just have to get used to charging your pen near a power source. It’s a tad irritating, but not a massive issue (as far as we’re concerned).

Turning the Nord on and off is pretty easy; just tap the button 5 times to toggle the power. You can also push the button 2 (or 3) times to quickly check the status of its battery with its intelligent battery life indicator. Pretty nifty so far!

Aesthetics are nice, but the Nord’s real value becomes apparent once you actually start using it. Barring one or two quirky design choices, we found the Nord extremely user friendly and intuitive.

One of our favourite things about the Nord is the fact that it comes with two coil options. The single mesh strip in the slightly larger 0.6 ohm coil allows it to provide a slightly more powerful hit than the 1.4 ohm version, while delivering optimal flavour and cloud production. But mouth-to-lung vapers may prefer the standard 1.4 ohm coil for its ability to provide a more restricted hit without giving away too much flavour in the process.

Both of the coils that come in this kit are easy to install and use—no need to screw them in; just pull the pod off the device and push the coil in before filling up the pod, closing it up, and reattaching it. You’ll know you’ve done it correctly because the coil won’t fit otherwise (which is a nice little failsafe on SMOK’s part). A 0.8 ohm mesh coil and a 1.4 ohm ceramic version are also sold separately for users who want a little more variety.

We also have to give the Nord’s battery some love here. At 1100mAh, it can go for up to 2 days of heavy usage before quitting. Interestingly, we also didn’t notice much of a decrease in performance when the battery got low. This is mostly a good thing in our opinion—although it can result in an unpleasant surprise for people who use their pen’s performance as an indicator that the battery needs charging.

As for the Nord’s refillable pods, they tend to last about as long as the battery, which means you’ll normally refill and charge at around the same time. It’s little things like this that really make the Nord feel designed with user satisfaction and convenience in mind. The device handles both nicotine salt and freebase juices really well with both of the included coils.

The one design flaw we noticed with the Nord has to do with its charging port, which is located on the bottom of the pen. This unfortunately means you can’t stand it up while it’s charging.

It’s strange to us that a product so immaculately engineered in almost every other respect would have such an obvious design flaw—but at least this issue doesn’t affect the vaping experience itself. And because the bottom of the device is flat, you can still stand it up between charges (which looks very sharp).

The SMOK Nord starter kit currently retails for about $27 CAD, although more recent versions of the device sell for about twice as much. This makes the original Nord kit about the same price as other vape starter kits like the STLTH, so choosing one is really a question of what your priorities and individual vaping style are.

Ultimately, we love the Nord for the high-quality vaping experience it provides with both freebase and nicotine salt juices. It also scores major points for its ease of use, long-lasting battery, and how gosh darn pretty it is.

The things we don’t love about this vape system both have to do with the way it charges—the charger in the box just isn’t terribly impressive, and putting the port on the bottom of a device that was designed to stand on its end strikes us as a poorly thought out decision.

At the end of the day, though, this is still a vape system that knocks it out of the park when it comes to both looks and the quality of the actual vaping experience. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better quality vape system with refillable pods at this price.
