SMOK pod systems have a lot going for them—gorgeous original designs, useful features, and solid, common-sense engineering. With the addition of the SMOK Novo 4, the brand adds even more features to a device line its customers already know and love.
How does this vape device compare to the rest of the Novo line, and to similar products from competing brands? Trust us to help you find out as we take you on a journey exploring the Novo 4’s pros, cons, and features. The SMOK Novo 4 Pod Vape Device Kit includes the following items:
As for the kit itself, it’s pretty much what you’d expect from looking at other SMOK products. You get a modern-looking box with a high-end retail feel, and the packaging inside is a well-made bed for the included pieces. SMOK always puts their products together in a way that lets you know they’re serious about quality, which is always a good sign.
One of the first things you’ll likely notice about the Novo 4 is that it’s bigger than previous versions. The Novo 4 measures 93.5 x 26.5 x 17.7mm—over 5 mm longer than the original Novo and the Novo 2. The Novo 4 also weighs a few extra grams, but at only 51.7g in total, it’s still light enough to be convenient.
In terms of style, not that much has changed at first glance for the Novo 4—it still looks kind of like a fancy flash drive with a duck-bill mouthpiece. That’s a pretty typical profile for a SMOK device, and we’re not complaining—they keep their designs economical, helping them score extra points for convenience with many users.
Upon closer inspection, however, you’ll notice the Novo 4 comes with a few bells and whistles not seen on previous models. For instance, there’s an all-new air-inlet ring that lets you scroll through differently-sized vents to customize the thickness of your vapor. This is one of the device’s most innovative features as far as we’re concerned, but you’ll find out why when we discuss using it in the next section.
Finally, we need to give a shout out to SMOK for their design options. Once again, the brand has outdone themselves in this department, providing colours and pattern choices for even the most eclectic users. The Novo 4’s textured zinc alloy shell can be purchased in stabilizing wood, armor, and carbon fiber styles, creating a tough and rugged vibe that practically begs for heavy use.
This is a vape device that looks like it wants to be used—so, how does it perform? We put the Novo 4 through its paces, and we’re pretty happy with what we discovered.
Firstly, let’s talk about that adjustable airflow feature—because it rules. Turn the knob near the mouthpiece of the device to adjust the thickness of your stream immediately. This is a terrific way to control the concentration of flavour you receive on each draw, allowing you to truly vape your way.
The button on the Novo 4 is also a nice touch (literally), which allows you to control numerous functions from the same source. That might feel counterintuitive to some users—but remember, we were doing that with smartphones years ago.
Like other SMOK products, clicking the Novo 4’s power button 5 times toggles the device on or off. However, clicking it twice while the device is on lets you adjust the wattage, dialing it up by an extra 0.5W with each subsequent click. Meanwhile, the display screen tells you your wattage, battery level, resistance, and how many puffs you’ve taken in the current session.
The Novo 4 lets you use anywhere from 5–25W, providing plenty of performance for users who prefer mild or heavy hits. And the integrated 800mAh battery gives you plenty of time between charges—although the inclusion of a USB-C fast-charging port on the bottom of the device means you can refill the entire thing in just 90 minutes. Nice.
In terms of pod and coil performance, the Novo 4 uses replacement press-in coils rather than building them into the 2ml pods. There’s one feature that stands out as a big step forward here, and that’s the 3 silicone rings on each coil, which SMOK says reduce the risk of leakage. Based on our experience, that seems reasonable—there were no accidents on our end.
For starters, the mouthpiece and hole on the Novo 4 are slightly smaller than some previous Novo devices, including the SMOK Novo X. If you’re looking for a device that provides a more authentic mouth-to-lung draw, this is a good thing—but those who prefer other vaping styles may find it harder to get used to.
It’s also worth noting that the Novo X allows you to dial down your wattage to 1W, whereas the Novo 4’s minimum is 5W. Users who crave more powerful hits won’t even notice this restriction, but if you prefer your draws mild, you may find the lower limit on the Novo 4 slightly disappointing.
Like many other SMOK vape devices, the Novo 4 retails for about $60 CAD. It’s not exactly cheap—but it also doesn’t perform like a cheap product, so that’s to be expected. And honestly, there are more expensive pod systems out there that provide less bang for your buck, so this is a pretty good deal.
The Novo 4 is ideal for users who already love the look and feel of SMOK devices but crave additional airflow and flavour control. It’s also a nice upgrade for current devotees of the Novo line who’d like a fast charging device, or anyone seeking an economical and well-designed vape for MTL-draws.
The only people we would tell to avoid this pod system are those who prefer milder draws than what it can deliver at 5W. Pretty much anyone else can find a way to have a good time with this device, thanks to the fine-tuning ability it offers and it’s unmistakable style.
