STLTH, Juul & Vype—The Low Down on Pod Systems

Vape pod devices are gaining huge traction among vapers, and for good reason. Compared to traditional tank style vape systems, they are more affordable, easier to use and maintain, and less bulky. These new pod systems provide a low-powered pull, using higher nicotine percentages and integrated pods instead of traditional tanks. All of these features come together in a product that is simple, easy to operate, and very portable. Uniquely, vape pod devices are capable of offering a cigarette-like experience, replicating the convenience and hit that smokers look for in a traditional cigarette, and are well-suited for those looking to quit smoking cigarettes but are unwilling to use drugs or slow-release nicotine aides.

In this article, we are comparing 3 of the more popular models of vape pod devices: STLTH, Juul Slate, and the Vype ePen 3. The main features we will look at are ease of use, available flavours, cost, and portability. Let's get started!

It’s no doubt this device is a hit among consumers for its similarity to cigarettes, ease of use and affordability. Designed in Canada, STLTH features a compact and sleek design that’s barely noticeable in the front pocket of your favourite pair of jeans, the side pocket of your backpack, or at the bottom of your purse. With its rounded oblong shape, weighing in at only 26 grams, you’ll notice this device is ultra-light and very comfortable in your hand. STLTH starter kits offer you a choice between black, grey, navy blue, and rose gold devices but unlike Juul starter kits, STLTH kits only include a single 2 mL pod.

The STLTH comes equipped with a 420 mAh battery which supplies plenty of power for a day’s worth of vaping under typically heavy usage and when drained recharging is made easy with a standard micro-USB cable that will charge from any wall, using the supplied 0.5A brick, or USB port. The built-in LED indicator will signal the device is fully charged and ready for use.

Like the Juul and Vype, the STLTH is draw-activated, which only requires the user to inhale from the mouthpiece to fire the device. The replacement pods, which come in a variety of flavours and nicotine strengths (20 mg/mL, 35 mg/mL, and 50 mg/mL), are manufactured by STLTH and are filled with 2 mL of nicotine salt e-liquid. The pods are designed to be expendable and therefore cannot be refilled but depending on usage, each pod should last you between 2-5 days. STLTH Pods are sold in 3 packs and have a wide range of flavours. Let's check out some of the specs:

  • E-liquid capacity: 2 mL
  • Strengths: 20, 35, and 50 mg/mL
  • Refillable: no
  • Activation: draw activated
  • Battery: 420 mAh
  • Battery level indicator: yes
  • Charging port: micro-USB
  • Full charge cycle: 90 minutes
  • Overall size (with pod): 105.1 mm x 19.1 mm
  • Weight: 26 grams

Juul is one of the best-selling pod systems on the market. Known for its ease of use and consistent performance, it’s as straightforward as it gets. What you get is a sleek, modern design that is 10.3 mm shorter and 4 mm narrower than the STLTH, and 28.2 mm shorter / 11.6 mm narrower than the Vype ePen 3. Since there are no menus or buttons to get in the way the Juul ensures that each time you use the device you’ll get a perfect and balanced hit. It’s about half the weight as the STLTH at 14 grams and almost a third the weight of the Vype ePen 3. For comparisons sake, it would be the difference between an iPhone 4, an iPhone 8 and an iPhone 11 Max in your pocket.

The main drawback is the 100 mAh battery which will require charging quite often, but the folks at Juul Labs have thought of that, offering what they call a charging dock—a magnetic attachment on the bottom of the device that essentially turns your Juul into a USB stick that can plug into any computer’s USB port or a wall brick. Simply remove this dock when not charging and continue using as intended. Similar to the STLTH and Vype, an LED battery level indicator is standard. If you lose this charging adapter, though, you will have to purchase a new device, or charging adapter.

Juul manufactures their own non-refillable replacement pods that come with slightly less e-liquid at only 0.7 mL capacity. The pods are available in 7 flavours and similar to STLTH, Juul pods are sold in packs of 4 and have similar nicotine strengths of: 15 mg/mL, 30 mg/mL, and 50 mg/mL though unlike STLTH, Juul lacks a flavourless option. Like its competitors the user must inhale to activate the device and which according to Juul, should last for about 200 puffs before another pod is needed.

  • Charging port: proprietary USB charging dock
  • Full charge cycle: 50 minutes

What’s unique about the Vype ePen 3 is that it is designed and sold by British American Tobacco (BAT), the largest tobacco company in the world. This doesn’t change the fact that through and through it is a vape device and will likely help you transition away from cigarettes. As the name suggests, this is the 3rd generation of ePen, and its slightly larger than the others in this article with a length of 123 mm and width of 27 mm. It’s also the heftiest at 39 grams. The Vype ePen3 comes in black, blue, silver, gold, red, and white.

The extra weight comes from the largest battery among the three coming in at a whopping 650 mAh, making this device good for finishing an entire pod on a single charge. Like the others you get an LED battery level indicator but unlike the others the Vype ePen 3 is the only device here that contains a passthrough system, allowing you to vape while its charging.

Vype ePen 3 systems use cartridges instead of pods, and they cannot be interchanged with other Vype pod devices. Like the STLTH, these come prefilled and sealed with 2 mL of e-liquid and varying concentrations of nicotine. While this device shines with its wide array of available flavours that really allow you to customize your vaping experience (below), the Vype ePen 3 cartridges are only available in 12 mg/mL, 18 mg/mL and 30 mg/mL nicotine salt concentrations, so heavy smokers might have a tough time with the lower concentrations.

All of these devices are quite small in comparison to traditional tank vape devices. Their slim design, compact frames and lightweight construction are designed to replicate the feeling of pulling out a cigarette.

Verdict: If small is what you want, get the STLTH or Juul. They are easily the smallest and both devices offer a decent selection of flavours and nicotine strengths. The Vype ePen 3 is the largest of these 3 devices, mainly due to its larger battery, but still compact enough by comparison to traditional tank devices.

STLTH and Vype ePen3 have identical capacities at 2 mL, and both have a wide range of flavours, while the Juul comes in just shy of that mark at 0.7 mL. STLTH, Juul, and Vype support their systems with multi-pack replacement pods containing 3, 4, and 2 pods, respectively.

Verdict: If you are a heavy vaper, look for a device with a larger capacity so it will last longer. Conversely, if you are just an occasional vaper, a smaller device like the STLTH may be perfect for you.

The Vype ePen 3 with its 650 mAh battery comes out on top here, while the STLTH falls just short at 420 mAh. The Juul has the smallest battery by a large margin at only100 mAh.

Verdict: the trade-off for a larger battery is a larger overall package, so if you’re looking for a slimmer device that is easily concealed, consider the STLTH or Juul. It’s worth mentioning that because the Vype ePen 3 is a passthrough device, its battery endurance is largely similar to STLTH. Given the package size, though, we would give another vote to STLTH.

Charging either the STLTH or Vype ePen 3 is easy enough, as most people already have a micro-USB cable laying around, however The Juul requires the proprietary charging adapter. Good news is this adapter is included in the starter kit but if you lose it you won’t be able to charge your Juul, which costs it major points in our comparison.

Juul has the fewest flavours available, among these devices, and no option for flavourless. The selection of flavours between STLTH and Vype are similar, with the STLTH nudging ahead by quite a few. When it comes to nicotine strength the STLTH and Juul pair up with very similar selections available, while the Vype concentrations are about half the strength of the other two devices.

E-liquid quality is equally as important as flavour, and nobody does this better than STLTH. They have collaborated with the best e-liquid manufacturers in North America to produce a high-end product in a large number of flavours.

Verdict: As with e-liquid capacity, this is a personal preference based on the type of hit you are looking for. Two great options exist for a strong hit both in an easily concealed, compact size in the STLTH or Juul. Conversely, if a lighter hit is all you’re after, the Vype ePen 3 will fit the bill perfectly with the lowest nicotine strength e-liquid among these devices, plus the largest battery.

In terms of the number of flavours available, STLTH wins this vote hands down with brands like Naked 100 and Fruitbae supporting the device.

Our vote goes to STLTH, and for a number of reasons. We like that it is a Canadian designed device with huge influence from vapers across the country providing feedback. We also prefer the e-liquid over the other pod systems due to its superior composition and ingredients. You can tell that STLTH has put a lot of effort into collaborating with leading e-liquid manufacturers to provide the perfect hit. Its battery capacity is sufficient for most, and its e-liquid capacity is suited for several days of vaping, or about 250 puffs, depending on usage. Charging is super easy with no special adapters required, just a basic micro-USB cable.

Among these devices, STLTH is the closest you’ll get to a cigarette-like experience, too, because of its restricted pull. This is intentional, as are all its other features, designed to resemble the experience of smoking a cigarette, but without most of the harmful chemicals.
